The premium of a gold coin is the percentage paid above its intrinsic metal value (fine gold content × spot price). It varies based on rarity, numismatic demand, mintage, and condition. Common investment coins such as the Krugerrand or Maple Leaf typically carry a 2% to 6% premium over spot.

The Swiss Vreneli (CHF 20 in gold, 5.805 g fine gold, 900‰ fineness) is the most traded gold coin in Switzerland. During crises or periods of high demand, its premium can exceed 10% — driven by its sentimental and patrimonial value in French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino.

In Switzerland, gold coins with fineness below 995‰ (such as the Vreneli at 900‰) are not automatically VAT-exempt. Only investment coins precisely defined by the FTA qualify for exemption, making it essential to read the after-VAT premium when comparing offers.
