The premium on gold bars decreases as size increases. A 1 g bar may carry a premium of 15–25% over spot, while a 1 kg Good Delivery bar will have only a 0.5–2% premium. This is because fixed manufacturing costs (hallmarking, packaging, certificate) are better amortized across larger units.
In Switzerland, the most popular sizes for private investment are 50 g and 100 g bars, offering a good balance between reasonable premium (2–5%) and divisibility. 250 g and 500 g bars are favoured by family offices and investors with budgets > CHF 50,000. The kilo Good Delivery is the quintessential institutional format.
The major Swiss refineries — PAMP (Castel San Pietro, TI), Valcambi (Balerna, TI), Argor-Heraeus (Mendrisio, TI), and Metalor (Marin-Epagnier, NE) — produce bars recognized worldwide by the LBMA. A PAMP Fortuna or Valcambi bar can be instantly resold at any bank or counter in the world, making it the most liquid investment after standard coins.
