The four most traded gold coins in Switzerland are the Vreneli (CHF 20, 5.806 g fine gold, 900‰), the Krugerrand (1 oz, 33.93 g, 916‰), the Canadian Maple Leaf (1 oz, 31.10 g, 999.9‰), and the Austrian Philharmoniker (1 oz, 31.10 g, 999.9‰). Each coin has a different profile in terms of premium, liquidity, and recognition.

The Maple Leaf and Philharmoniker, at 999.9‰ fineness, offer the lowest premium (2–4%) and qualify as VAT-exempt investment gold in Switzerland. The Krugerrand (916‰) and Vreneli (900‰), while not automatically exempt, appear on the FOCBS list of recognized investment coins and also benefit from the exemption.

For liquidity, the Krugerrand is the world champion (over 70 million coins struck since 1967). The Maple Leaf is the most widespread in Europe. The Vreneli dominates in Switzerland. The Philharmoniker is very popular in German-speaking Europe. Tip: diversify across 2–3 coin types to maximize resale options.
