Advantages of silver jewelry

Accessibility, creativity and silver market trends.

Silver is the most accessible precious metal for jewelry: a gram of 925 silver is worth ~CHF 0.87, vs CHF 61.9 for a gram of 18k gold. This accessibility opens creative possibilities that the cost of gold forbids.

Technical Advantages: Silver is among the best thermal and electrical conductors, it is very malleable and ductile (50% elongation at break), easily welded with silver filler or solder, accepts a wide variety of finishes (bright, satin, patinated, black oxidized).

Disadvantages to manage: The main one is tarnishing (sulfidation). The formation of silver sulfide (Ag₂S) is catalyzed by perspiration, perfumes, and the urban atmosphere (SO₂). Solutions: rhodium barrier (0.1–0.5 micron of electrodeposited rhodium), storage in anti-tarnish bags, regular polishing.

Swiss Market Positioning: Fine Swiss jewelry is dominated by gold (banking clientele standard) and platinum (luxury watches). Silver occupies the 'modern, accessible, creative' segment — very dynamic with independent designers and DTC (direct-to-consumer) brands.

Association with Other Materials: Silver pairs exceptionally well with semi-precious natural stones (turquoise, labradorite, agate), resins, enamels and local gilding. It is the base metal for ethnic/boho creations very much in demand in concept shops in Geneva and Zurich.
