Recognizing real gold: simple tests
Magnets, density and hallmarks: discover if your gold is authentic.
To recognize real gold, first check for official hallmarks (750, 585, etc.). A simple test with a neodymium magnet helps: gold is not magnetic; if your jewelry is attracted, it is likely plated steel.
Density test: Gold is exceptionally dense. A piece of real gold will always feel 'heavier' than a piece of lead or copper of the same size.
Ceramic test: Rub the object on an unglazed ceramic plate. A golden streak indicates real gold; a black streak indicates a base metal.
