Jewelry rhodium plating: complete guide
Why, when and how to rhodium plate your white gold and silver jewelry.
Rhodium plating is an electrodeposition process that deposits a thin layer of rhodium (0.1 to 0.5 micron) on white gold or silver jewelry. Rhodium offers a brilliant white finish, exceptional hardness, and tarnish resistance.
Why rhodium plate? 18k white gold naturally has a slightly yellowish tint (due to the pure gold). Rhodium plating masks this and gives a pure silvery white. Sterling silver tarnishes quickly — rhodium plating protects it for 6-12 months.
Lifespan: On a daily-wear ring, rhodium plating wears off in 6-18 months. On earrings, it lasts 2-3 years. Friction, perspiration and chemicals accelerate wear.
Cost in Switzerland: Re-rhodium plating at a jeweler costs CHF 30-80 per piece. Many jewelers include it free in the first year.
Alternative: Argentium alloy (960 silver + germanium) hardly tarnishes and doesn't need rhodium plating.
