The scrap value of gold in Switzerland is determined by the LBMA spot price (London Bullion Market Association) in CHF per gram. This price fluctuates during international trading sessions and is the reference for goldsmiths, jewellers, and precious metals dealers.
To calculate the value of a piece of jewellery or a gold lot, three parameters are essential: weight in grams, purity (in karats or millesimal fineness), and the margin applied by the buyer. An 18-karat gold jewel (750‰) contains only 75% fine metal.
In Switzerland, investment gold (bars and coins with fineness above 995‰) is VAT-exempt under Art. 18 para. 2 let. i VAT Act. Jewellery and gold scrap, however, are subject to the standard VAT rate.
